Keeping Your Personal Life Organized Outside of Work is Possible!

In today’s fast-paced marketplace, maintaining a personal life outside of your full-time job can seem nearly impossible. Cellular communication requires us to be “on” all the time. Emails, calls, text messages, tweets and comments can make it feel as if we’re never not working. Yet, success on the job requires balance. We need time to unwind, invest in personal relationships, and explore hobbies or our work life will suffer. As fruitless as it might seem, working all the time is not a recipe for success. Take a look at some tips for maintaining a healthy personal life outside of work.

Reach Out to Friends and Family

Schedule some quality time with your loved ones, even people that you haven’t heard from in a while. Plan an activity that will take your mind off of work. Try to focus the conversation on positive issues that don’t relate to your life at the office. Do your best to actively listen and engage your friends and family without staring at your phone the whole time. You’ll find yourself returning to the job feeling refreshed and invigorated.

Try Something New

Give yourself some time to try something out of the ordinary. Go to a new location such as a new restaurant, park or a neighboring city. Crack open a book that you’ve been meaning to read or spend a few hours trying a new activity. New experiences can put our professional world into perspective. You’ll also be able to look at your work with a fresh set of eyes, often increasing our productivity and creativity.

Be Active

Physical exercise is important for keeping our brains alert and constructive. You might be exhausted when you get out of work, but once your muscles start working, the endorphins will give you a second wind. You’ll have more energy throughout the day, you’ll sleep better, and you’ll have a better mood all around. Plus, regular exercise breaks up the day, helping you feel more well-rounded at work and in your personal life.

Maintain Healthy Habits

In addition to exercise, your body can’t function without proper nutrition and a full night’s sleep. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean sources of protein, and try to avoid heavy carbs that will slow you down. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep throughout the workweek. Try dimming your phone or computer at night so the blue screens won’t keep you up when you should be sleeping.

Manage Your Time Carefully

Nearly every step toward organizing your personal life involves time management. Meeting with friends and family, exercising regularly, trying new hobbies, or getting a full night’s sleep isn’t possible unless you’ve a way to spend your time efficiently. Employee time tracking software and staff management software can help you see how/where you spend your time. Limit your downtime to the activities above and see what a difference it makes.
