Are Virtual Teams Getting Real?

With the span of work getting Global and crossing boundaries there has been a significant rise in the number of Organisations extensively employing Virtual Teams.

A Virtual Team comprise of a group of individuals who work in a collaborative manner across time, space and organisational constraint. They interact with the Employers through electronic means such as Web conferencing, Instant Messaging etc. They are located outside organization’s physical boundaries. The major reasons behind rise in the development and usage of Virtual Teams are the need to utilize talent available at different locations, to boost employee collaboration within the organisation & across the global centers, and the need to improve the over-all productivity.

Virtual Teams provide immense benefits in terms of cost as it brings down the office expenses and costs related to travel, relocation, real estate etc. Moreover it facilitates effective knowledge sharing as people belonging to different backgrounds work together, which provides different point of views on the same problem.

Apart from the benefits, Virtual Teams also have few challenges in the way they function. Leading Virtual Teams is not an easy job.  All the interactions are done using online platforms hence the Managers need to pay a lot of attention towards clearly communicating the goals, expectations, vision, communication rules, performance standards etc.

Virtual Teams may prove to be more productive but managing them, getting them to function and carving out work from them is a real problem. In this scenario with such less insights into the actual work taking place it becomes increasingly difficult for the Managers to track the effort put in by the team members and to hold people accountable for any pitfalls.

Our product Sapience provides the much-needed support in such a scenario; it’s a web-based application that performs Smart Effort Analytics and provides Automated Work Visibility. The work done by the users is shown as an Activity mix, and the time spent on each business activity is recorded while the details of personal use are not conferred to the Managers.

The data generated is a replica of the effort put by the users, which provides the opportunity for the Managers to set improvement goals. The Managers can analyse the illustrated reports generated for each employee as well as the team so that they can attribute accountability where it fits best.
